Apple announced Monday morning that opening weekend sales of the iPad mini and fourth-generation iPad topped 3 million, double the sales of the third-generation Retina display iPad in March.
Apple could sell 62 million iPads this year, according to Forrester estimates. “We think Apple will sell another 20 million [iPads] this quarter, which is a heck of a lot of iPads,” Forrester analyst Sarah Rotman Epps told Wired Friday. “It’ll be a mix of iPad mini and the big iPad.”
Indeed, the 3 million figure Apple provided did not break out iPad mini sales, specifically. We likely won’t hear those exact numbers until Apple’s first-quarter earnings report after the holiday season.
“We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad minis,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in the press release. “We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”
A survey by Topeka Capital Markets found the 16 GB model is the most popular, the pricier 64 GB model the least (and, thus, the most available).
Friday’s launch-day anticipation for both products was a bit more tepid at some Apple Store locations compared to launches of past iOS devices, but it obviously didn’t slow sales.
